The number of treatments depends on the nature and severity of the problem as well as on the health of the patient. In acute cases, close sessions are needed. In chronic cases, the treatments are more widely spaced and are given until the patient’s condition stabilizes. For example, in a case of recent sciatica for a patient who is healthy, 2 to 6 treatments should be expected for a significant relief.
In order to maintain a balanced health, it is advisable to consult with an acupuncturist at each seasonal change.

The acupuncture needle is very thin and dozens of times thinner than the needle of a syringe. Moreover, it is a dry needle, so it does not remove or insert any substance in the body.
The sensation felt during the needle insertion, is more comparable to a small mosquito bite that lasts a fraction of a second. Moreover, thanks to the sedative effects, most of the time, the patient can relax in a peaceful atmosphere during treatment.

5. Is this safe?

The needles used in acupuncture are made of stainless steel. They are fine and full, no substance can be injected into the body through them. They are single-use needles, sterile and disposable. This is what makes impossible the risk of disease transmission. Moreover, the needles are collected in bins of biomedical waste and are disposed of in a safe manner by specialized companies.

6. Does Medicare (Assurance-Maladie) pay for the cost of treatment?

Acupuncture treatments are not currently covered by the governmental health insurance. However, many private insurance companies, the CSST and the SAAQ reimburse acupuncture. Check with your insurer and insist that acupuncture be added to your insurance policy if it is not already.
